Catching Pokemon used to be simple, right? You walked around in the tall grass, they popped out and attacked you, you fought and captured them. Simple stuff. But with Sword and Shield things are quite different. Taking a queue from Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, the latest games feature Pokemon in the overworld. Still somewhat simple, but what do you do when you can’t run up to the creature you want to catch? Here’s how to catch flying Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

How to Catch Flying Pokemon

Whether it’s a Wingull, Pidove, or Butterfree, flying Pokemon can be tough to get to in Sword and Shield. Some of them fly so high you have no chance of ever reaching them. The trick is to get them to come to you. You can try to just get in front of them and grab their attention. This will work with the more aggressive types, but not everyone. Instead you need to know how to whistle, so check out that guide if you are unaware.

Whistling is pretty easy, just pressing down on the left thumbstick will do it. Of course, this will attract a lot of nearby creatures so try to focus on the flying Pokemon you want to encounter and avoid the rest. Whistling at them will get their attention, causing them to fly down toward you so you can attack. Some will fly away if they see you moving close though, so try to stay stationary if that happens often. Let them get close before going in for the attack. Repeat this enough and you’ll be a master.

Hopefully that explains how to catch flying Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Get out there and start whistling and the birds will flock your way. Sorry for the pun.
