Life is tough for solo players in Red Dead Online.  Forming a posse and playing with friends is the optimal way to experience the game as it gives you a little bit of protection against other players.  There are a couple of different ways to play with friends in Red Dead Online.  You can create a temporary or permanent posse and invite friends to play with you.  Or you can accept an invitation to someone else’s posse and let them worry about managing it.

Forming a posse can be done at any time in the game by accessing the Free Roam menu.  To access the Free Roam menu just tap left on the d-pad on either the Xbox One or PlayStation 4.  From here select the Posse option on this menu.  Once in the Posse menu you can see Nearby Posses, and if you hit the X/Square button from this screen you will be able to Form your own Posse.

Choosing your Posse Type in RDR2 Online

There are some options here that you’ll need to decide on.  You can choose for your Posse to be temporary or persistent.  You can choose whether anyone can join or whether its invite only.  You can choose Friendly Fire options and the location of your Posse’s camp.

Temporary Posse

The temporary posse can have up to 4 players and it’s free to set up.  The temporary posse will disband and be deleted after the Posse leader leaves the game.

Persistent Posse

The persistent posse can have up to 7 players and it costs $200 to set up.  This type of posse is saved and anytime the Posse leader is online it will reform and all members will be working for this group.  In the Persistent Posse, player stats and awards are tracked in game and you can customize the Posse’s style.

The Persistent Posse also allows for some unique gameplay features where Posses can battle each other in Posse Versus in Free Roam.

Inviting Friends to Play in Red Dead Redemption 2 Online

Whichever posse style that you choose, you’re going to need to recruit other players to your group and you can invite your friends once the posse is established.  Inviting and playing with friends is pretty simple from here.  Once you’ve got the posse created just head back into the posse menu and tab down to the Invite to Posse option.  This will open a screen that will allow you to send invitations to nearby players, friends, crew, or recent players.

Accepting an Invitation to a Posse in Red Dead Online

In the same free roam menu that you use to create a Posse and play with friends in Red Dead Online you can also check invitations that you’ve received to join other’s games.  These invitations can be found under the Invites tab in the Free Roam menu.
