Super Smash Bros. Ultimate How to Do Snake Codec

Like other Smash Bros. games, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has some Easter Eggs for players to discover.  This one in particular will allow you to use Snake’s Codec as a taunt move that will open unique dialog between Snake and characters from the Metal Gear series.

This Easter Egg originally appeared in Brawl, and Nintendo hasn’t changed much about it since then.  You’ll even hear some of the lines referencing Brawl as the game that you are playing.  While it would’ve been nice for new voiceover to be included for the new characters that have arrived since that game, it’s a cool Smash Easter Egg regardless.

Listen to Codec in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

You’re going to need to do a couple of things.  There are some rules to get this Easter Egg to work.  You can do this against the CPU or against human opponents.  You can also do this Easter Egg in any game mode, including Training.  That said, you will need to be playing on the Shadow Moses Island level and it will need to be the Normal variation of it.  You’ll also need to be using Snake as your character.

This Easter Egg will only work on characters that were in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  That includes:  Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Link, Zelda, Sheik, Ganondorf, Samus, Fox, Falco, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, Ness, Ice Climbers, Marth, Mr. Game & Watch, and the other Brawl characters.

Snake’s Codec is actually a variation of his down taunt.  So the down taunt button is the one you’ll use for this, but the trick is that you need to press it very quickly.  This does not mean that it needs to be mashed or hit mutiple times.  It just needs to be hit one time, very quickly.  This can be done very easily by using this trick.  Try placing your thumb on the down taunt button and position it so that the edge of the button is between your finger nail and your finger.  Then just try to click the button by sliding your thumb down across the button instead of pressing it in.

You’ll know that you’ve done it correctly when Snake kneels down and puts his hand to his ear instead of doing his normal down taunt.  This will begin the conversation with Mei Ling, Otacon, or Colonel Campbell depending on the character.  These codecs range from incredibly funny, to insightful.

Unfortunately, Nintendo did not make new Codec calls for the new characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.  In fact, this Easter Egg doesn’t work on characters that weren’t in Brawl and it looks like the ported this codec content directly into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
