Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: How to Parry or Perfect Shield

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a highly accessible fighter thanks to how easy it is to pick up and have fun. It has lasted this long though because diving deeper into its mechanics is often very rewarding, making you a more capable player and delivering a richer gameplay experience. This is the case with Parry, also called Perfect Shield, a mechanic that has been altered quite a bit for SSBU. Here’s how to parry in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Parry in SSBU is all about your shield. When you deploy it, but also when you drop it. To successfully parry another fighter you need to bring your shield up before their attack, but then drop it right when that attack would hit you. It’s all about timing, and this will be the toughest part. The best thing to do is go into Training and have an opponent hit you at a steady pace. Use this to learn the timing of your parry, popping and dropping your shield at different times.

If you succeed in your parry, the other character will be frozen in place for just a few frames. You need to react quickly, switching to attack right when the other character is frozen. Hit them and they’ll certainly go flying, as they have no defense against your oncoming attack.

And that’s how to parry in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Simple enough, but tough to master. Just like the game itself.
