While Super Smash Bros. Ultimate contains every single fighter ever featured in the series, plus some newcomers, it’s the old favorites that everyone will surely want to unlock first. We’ve already shared how to unlock all characters in the game, but if you just want to get one fighter available that method might take awhile. To help out, we’re breaking down the quickest and easiest way to unlock fan favorite fighters, starting with the second half of gaming’s biggest duo: the Super Mario Brothers. Here’s how to unlock Luigi in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

If you use the unlock method linked above, it will likely take you almost an hour to get Luigi in your game. This is because he’s pretty late in the unlock chain for that method. There’s a quicker way though, it just involved playing the other gamemodes in SSB Ultimate. You can work your way through World of Light, where Luigi should unlock partway through, in the Mysterious Dimension. However, for targeted unlocks like this it’s a bit faster to just load Classic using the character that’s required.

Unlock Luigi in Classic Mode

Playing and completing Classic Mode using Mario will present you with the classic battle to unlock Luigi. This method will require that you beat Classic Mode with Mario and unlock the characters in his route leading up to Luigi, so you’ll still have to do some work here.  Mario’s unlock route can be found below:

Mario > Sonic > Bayonetta > Little Mac > Ike > Luigi

Once you’ve beaten Classic Mode with Mario you will get a challenge to unlock Sonic.  You can then beat Classic Mode again with Mario or Sonic to unlock the next character in the chain.  This will be Bayonetta.  This pattern will continue to Luigi and beyond.  Regardless of whether you actually win the challenge to unlock any character you will progress to the next one in the chain.  If you don’t win on your first try you’ll find them in the Challenger’s Approach section of the menus.

Another good way to get him early is to just use the Versus Mode method explained in the link above. He unlocks pretty quickly that way, so get working on that and you’ll be ready to go.

And that’s how to unlock Luigi in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Check out our other guides for more help with the game, and let us know if there’s a particular character you want to know how to get.
