Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: How to Unlock Mewtwo

Unlocking characters is one of the best parts of playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Featuring dozens of returning fighters, with some new ones thrown in on top, the game allows more unlocks than ever before. Of course, this also means that unlocking everyone takes much longer than usual. If you want a particular character, it can take awhile. To help, here’s how to unlock Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Of course, you can always use the method that we recommend for unlocking everyone. However, Mewtwo is pretty low in the list for that type of unlock method. Instead, the best way currently known for unlocking Mewtwo the fastest is to play through World of Light. He will join your roster once you defeat the Wispy Woods’ spirit in the Mysterious Dimension. This will still take awhile, but it’s the best known method currently. Some have suggested playing against Daisy in Vs mode, so test that and let us know in the comments how it works for you.

Unlock Mewtwo in Classic Mode

Playing and completing Classic Mode using Fox (multiple times) will present you with the classic battle to unlock Mewtwo. This method will require that you beat Classic Mode with Mario and unlock the characters in his route leading up to Mewtwo, so you’ll still have to do some work here.  Mewtwo’s unlock route can be found below:

Fox > Captain Falcon > Zero Suit Samus > Peach > Falco > Daisy > Bowser Jr. > Wolf > Mewtwo

Once you’ve beaten Classic Mode with Fox you will get a challenge to unlock Captain Falcon (assuming you haven’t unlocked him elsewhere).  You can then beat Classic Mode again with Fox or Captain Falcon to unlock the next character in the chain.  In this instance it will be Zero Suit Samus.  This pattern will continue to Mewtwo.  Once you’ve reached Mewtwo you can still play with any of these characters in Classic Mode to unlock more characters in other unlock trees.  Regardless of whether you actually win the challenge to unlock any character you will progress to the next one in the chain.  If you don’t win on your first try you’ll find them in the Challenger’s Approach section of the menus.

Mewtwo is a definite fan favorite, with players around the world looking at him as one of SSBU’s best fighters. His inclusion in Melee was a huge surprise, and unlocking him brings back some great memories for longtime fans. So it makes sense that many players would seek the fastest way to unlock him.
