The Master Sword. As soon as you begin a new game in The Legend of Zelda series you start to wonder when you’ll be getting this iconic blade. Some games skip it, like Majora’s Mask. Others embrace it, making it a huge part of the story and experience. Breath of the Wild is somewhere in the middle. You definitely want to get it, which is why we showed you where to find the Master Sword, but it actually tests you to make sure you are worthy. So, here’s our guide on how to get the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

I wanted to call this something else, but also wanted to avoid spoilers. So, take that as a warning, this is a little spoilery, as it describes a test that will be applied to those who want to wield the Master Sword in Breath of the Wild. If you want everything to be a surprise, then you shouldn’t be here anymore, so I’m going to move forward assuming that everyone wants to know exactly how to get the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Hearts. You need lots and lots of heart. “How many hearts do you need to get the Master Sword” is the better question. The answer is 13. As we said in our Breath of the Wild Beginner’s Guide, after collecting Spiritual Stones you have a choice of whether to up your stamina or get another heart container. Hopefully you heeded our advice and went with hearts every time, because you have to have at least 13 available hearts to pull the Master Sword out of its pedestal.

And don’t go chugging potions or eating a bunch of food that raises your max hearts. These do not count, they will simply be removed as soon as you put your hands onto the Master Sword. You need to hit tons of shrines, then use the stones you get as a reward to raise your maximum heart level to 13. Head to the Kokiri Forest and give it a shot. It should look something like below, where I had the exact number of hearts needed to wield the blade. An additional spoiler warning: the video also has the cutscene from right after.

And that’s it for how to get the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
