Eliza before a tarot reading

The Quarry: What Happens if You Refuse a Tarot Reading?

Recommended Videos

For players of The Quarry, choosing your adventure can sometimes be a perilous decision and every choice can have drastic consequences, but they can also have mundane ones.  One of the most interesting choices in the game is, between every chapter, where you meet with a mysterious figure who divines your future using tarot cards, a classic occult fortune-telling item from the Enlightenment era.  When you meet with them, you get a choice as to whether or not you want to see a possible future, but should you?  Read on for our guide on What Happens if You Refuse a Tarot Reading in The Quarry!

What Happens if You Refuse a Tarot Reading in The Quarry?

No need for spoiler warnings, there are no drastic consequences if you skip a tarot card reading, but you don’t get to see a possible vision of your future, so it’s not the best idea.  You will have to play the chapter again to see the visions given for that chapter’s cards you find, and since the fortuneteller only allows you to choose one of as many as 4 cards in a given chapter, refusing isn’t in your best interest.  If anything, it makes the fortuneteller annoyed.  Possible spoilers ahead.

If you’re still reading, then you’ve been warned.  The visions you see are at first vague glimpses of possible futures that seem like accidents you can prevent with mild consequences, but some futures are visions of absolutely gruesome deaths for any one of the main cast, and the fortuneteller is trying to warn you.  Observing them can be an asset while you plan your actions down to what items each character has access to.

But observing these visions can also ruin the surprise a bit in the plot, so if you want an unadulterated, perfectly blind first run of the game, it can be reasonably fun to try out or suggest to a friend.  The fortuneteller, Eliza, is played by the wonderful Grace Zabriskie, whose work with David Lynch on numerous films and Twin Peaks has honed her horror chops, so each interaction is a treat.

This concludes our guide on What Happens if You Refuse a Tarot Reading in The Quarry!  The game is another narrative horror with that choose-your-adventure vibe, and is genuinely fun to see through to the end!  Be sure to check out our other guides, and our review.

The Quarry comes to PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Series X|S on June 10, 2022.
