How Does Wordle Work?

Wordle is a daily word-guessing game where you have six attempts to guess the word of the day. Each word used must have 5 letters and exist in the English language. With each word put, the game will give you back clues based on the accuracy of the letters and their placements.

To make the game a bit easier, you want to open with words that have lots of vowels. Since most of the five-letter words in the English language contain at least one, not counting the letter Y, you can rule out quite a lot in doing so. That’s why opening with words like AUDIO, OUIJA, or ADIEU is so popular. It is considered “optimal” and will help you in ruling out other letters.

You also should not repeat letters until your 4th try. Ruling out a majority of the letters will give you an easier time. Should you find yourself actually stumped, we do have some methods that you can use to “cheat” in Wordle. While the idea of it can seem divisive or take away from the essence of the game, some people do need that extra push.

Alternatively, if you just want to hone your skills in these types of games, we also list out some games inspired by the popular word-guessing game. They all won’t deal with words and letter accuracy like the aforementioned but are still interesting to give them a shot.
