As promised, Cygames has uploaded a nearly 19 minute video featuring gameplay from the upcoming Arc System Works-developed fighting game, Granblue Fantasy: Versus.
The majority of the video consists of a match between professional fighting game players Daigo and Fuudo during the closed beta, but it turns out that the part leading up to it is just as significant, with the staff detailing some key information about Versus’ mechanics.
For instance, you might recall that Cygames said one thing it wanted to do was ensure that people not necessarily experienced with fighting games would be able to enjoy Versus, and it’s followed through with this intent by incorporating features like being able to block by either pressing a guard button or directional inputs, as well as being able to execute single-button evasive maneuvers and single-button specials (think Guilty Gear’s Stylish Mode).
Of course, there is incentive to playing more traditionally: every special has a cooldown (like the skills they’re inspired by in the source material), and using a single button to use them causes them to have longer cooldown periods. Furthermore, there are stronger versions of specials that come at the cost of an even longer cooldown, so it’s entirely likely that players can find themselves locked out of using specials if trying to execute these the easy way.
In addition, we learned some details about some of the roster, such as Charlotta being a heavy-hitting, speed-oriented character, while Ferry is a zoner who can use her whip to attack foes from a distance and then summon her pets to help keep the opponent at bay.
As a reminder, there will be a Closed Beta Test running from from May 31 to June 1. Aspiring participants have until May 24 at 11:00 p.m. PST / May 25 at 6:00 a.m. GMT to sign up.
Granblue Fantasy: Versus is due out for the PlayStation 4 in 2019.
