Today marks the arrival of the third installment in the Dead Space franchise, with Dead Space 3. The early critical response for Visceral Games’ latest shooter has been largely positive, with some backlash towards the developer for moving further away from the franchise’s survival horror roots.

Some critics hard critics have given the game a nearly perfect score. Tim Turi of Game Informer says that Dead Space 3 is only a sliver away from a 10/10, claiming that the game is “One of the most rewarding games he’s ever played.”

Another notoriously tough site for nabbing high review scores, Polygon, awarded the game a 9.5 from reviewer Arthur Gies who said that “Dead Space 3 is one of the best action games in years.”

Not all sites are in agreeance of the high marks for Dead Space 3. Kotaku advises its readers not to play Dead Space 3, with reviewer Tina Amini adding “This isn’t how Dead Space should be remembered. Play 1 or 2 instead, and savor the happy (creepy) memories.

Worse yet, Video Gamer’s Jon Denton wrote a scathing review of the new game from Visceral, giving it a smoldering 5/10 saying that Dead Space 3 is “devoid of ideas, hung up on laborious combat and obsessed with making even the exciting seem boring. In truth, it’s a bit of a shocker.”

Currently, Dead Space 3 sits on the metacritic review aggregator with a score of 79 on the Xbox 360, 82 on the PS3, and 80 on PC.
