President Donald Trump talked to reporters on Monday about who might lead the Republican Party after him. He was on his way to Japan when he said Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance could both run for president in 2028.
But Trump also talked about something else. As per Politico, some people have been saying he should try to stay in office for a third term. This would go against the Constitution, which only allows a president to serve twice. Steve Bannon, who used to work in the White House, recently brought up this idea.
When reporters asked Trump what he thought about this, he said, “I would love to do it – I have the best numbers ever.” But then he also said he has not spent much time thinking about it. He told reporters that the party has some really good people ready to step up.
Trump Clearly Has His Favorites Picked Out Already
Trump made it pretty clear that Rubio is someone he likes for the next election. When people asked him to say who might run, he pointed at Rubio, who was nearby talking to reporters on the plane. “We have great people – I don’t need to get into that. One of them is standing right here,” Trump said.
He also talked about how good Vance is at his job. “Obviously JD is great. The vice president is great,” Trump said. Then he added, “I’m not sure anyone would run against those two.” This means he thinks both of them would do well if they decided to run.
Vance has been doing a lot of important work in the government right now. He helps with problems at home and also deals with issues around the world. All of this work makes him look like a natural choice to follow Trump. Trump still feels confident about these two men, even though he has had trouble getting some other people he wanted into government jobs.
Bannon keeps talking about Trump running again more than most people. He said on his podcast that “There is a plan.” He was hinting that Trump might try to be president again, even though the law says you can only be president twice.
What Trump said on the plane shows he is thinking about what happens to the party when he leaves. He is clearly backing Rubio and Vance, two people he works closely with in government. Trump has been in the news a lot lately for other things too, like when he got very upset about trade deals. Nobody knows for sure if he will really leave in 2028 or if he will try what Bannon is talking about.
