Bill Maher sat down with Hunter Biden on a recent episode of Real Time. The talk covered Biden’s past addiction and other topics such as the Iran war and political corruption. Maher began the interview by talking about Biden’s laptop. News outlets had published material from the computer that was reportedly left behind. That material had videos and photos of Biden using drugs and taking part in other illicit activities.
Maher told Biden that the laptop would be the third word in his obituary. He said he knew more about the laptop than he wanted to know. According to Mediaite, Maher then said, “I’ve seen you with your d–k out. I’ve seen you with a crack pipe in your mouth. My question, are you running for president?” Biden replied with a joke. He said, “I’m here to announce…”
Maher kept going and asked, “Have you thought about that?” Biden answered, “No, I haven’t.” He added, “Here’s the thing. If I announce for president, then somebody should check and see if I relapsed.” Maher pointed out that Biden has stayed sober for more than seven years.
Hunter Biden addresses sobriety, media interviews, and questions about his Burisma role
Hunter Biden has appeared on several media outlets in recent months. He has spoken with Tucker Carlson and other hosts. Podcaster Joe Rogan said this week that he had planned to interview Hunter Biden, but the plan fell apart.
The conversation between Maher and Biden grew tense when Maher asked about claims that Biden made money from his father’s political work. Maher said Biden would never have received a board seat at the energy company Burisma without his father holding office. Biden left that role in 2019.
Biden replied to the point about privilege. He said, “I’m incredibly privileged. I mean, beyond anyone’s wildest imagination, not only because of who my dad was, but because of the father that he was. And so a lot of privilege comes from that, and I don’t deny that in any way.” Relatives have discussed related legal steps taken for him in other recent interviews, including how Jill Biden defended Hunter’s pardon.
The interview also touched on Biden’s long fight with addiction. Maher noted the seven-plus years of sobriety after bringing up the old photos and videos from the laptop. Biden did not say he had plans to run for president. He made clear he had not thought about a campaign and linked any such announcement to a check on whether he had relapsed. His father has started speaking again about his own time in office as tensions rise, with Joe Biden breaking his silence on the presidency.
Maher opened the segment by linking the laptop directly to Biden’s public image. He listed the images he had seen, including the one with a crack pipe, before asking about a possible presidential run. Biden treated the question as a joke at first, then gave a direct “no.”
