‘I Don’t Think You Should Rule Out Impeachment’: Jim Jordan Revives Gop Crusade Against Judges Who Rule Against Trump

He's keeping impeachment "on the table" for judges who won't play ball.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has said that impeaching federal judges is still on the table for Republicans, bringing back a controversial idea that had mostly disappeared in recent months. The Ohio Republican said that impeachment could happen for judges who make rulings against President Trump’s plans, though he said Congress should try other options first.

Jordan’s comments come after a rough period earlier this year when several Republican lawmakers tried to impeach federal judges. The push started in March when Trump publicly asked for a federal judge to be impeached after a ruling he did not like. Trump went further with his attacks, saying “we have bad judges. We have very bad judges. These are judges that shouldn’t be allowed.”

According to MSNBC, when asked about possible impeachment, Jordan said, “I don’t think you should rule out impeachment.” As the chairman of the committee that deals with judge impeachments, what he says matters a lot in deciding if these moves could go forward. He made clear that impeachment “shouldn’t be the first option for judges who have foiled Mr. Trump or otherwise issued troubling rulings,” but said it is still being considered.

Republican Impeachment Push Moves Forward Despite Public Opposition

After Trump’s March comments, Republican members of Congress quickly filed impeachment papers against several federal judges. The list included U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, U.S. District Court Judge Paul Engelmayer, U.S. District Court Judge John Bates, U.S. District Court Judge Amir Ali, U.S. District Court Judge John McConnell Jr., U.S. District Court Judge Theodore Chuang, and U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer.

Engelmayer is facing two separate impeachment attempts at the same time. The campaign got money from mega donor Elon Musk, who sent campaign donations to Republican members of Congress who backed the judge’s impeachment efforts.

This connection between rich donors and elected officials has raised questions about why the impeachment push is happening. The efforts come as federal courts have struck down several of Trump’s policy moves, including his big tariffs and immigration changes.

Even though some Republican officials are excited about it, most Americans do not support the idea. A Marquette University Law School poll done in April found that 70 percent of Americans were against impeaching federal judges over anti-Trump rulings.

But there is often a big gap between what the public wants and what Republican lawmakers actually do. With Jordan’s recent comments, it looks like the impeachment push against federal judges is not going away anytime soon.
