Gears of War is arguably the biggest franchise for the Xbox.  It saw four releases this generation, and Microsoft is hoping that the franchise will return on the Xbox One.  However, it’s completely up to Epic Games as to whether or not the third person shooter will arrive for the Xbox One.

Microsoft’s Phil Spencer revealed that it ultimately comes down to a decision from Epic in a recent interview on Famitsu.

“Gears of War is developed by Epic Games, and they’ve been our partners for a long time on Xbox 360…You should ask Epic Games about what they want to do.  We haven’t announced anything about Gears of War, but we hope to bring it to Xbox One in some form.   However, there’s nothing more I can tell you at this time.”

You would think that the success that Microsoft and Epic Games shared with the Gears of War series on the Xbox 360 would be enough to warrant the return of the series.  But Epic Games has lost a lot of the key developers on the Gears of War series in the recent years.  Cliff Bleszinski, Rod Fergusson and others responsible for the game have moved on to other ventures.  The last game in the series, Gears of War Judgment, was developed by People Can Fly, a studio that Epic purchased after the release of Bulletstorm.
