Sony is starting a new initiative in beta testing future system software updates on the console. As they get ready to launch the next big system update for the game they are looking for beta testers. While Japan and Europe both saw the applications open yesterday, North American applications are now being taken to be part of the beta for version 5.50.
Those interested in beta testing 5.50 can register here. Sony says that registration will stay open from now until the start of the beta which is expected to begin in February. There only seems to be one stipulation in registering for the beta — those who register must be 18 years or older.
Once the beta begins Sony will close off the registration process, so if you’re interested you should get that entry in by the end of the month as no concrete timetable other than “February” was given on the PlayStation blog.
Those that do sign up to beta test 5.50 will receive an email with instructions on how to download the beta software, and thankfully, beta testers will be able to roll back to previous versions of the beta if they choose to do so.
While Sony has held beta tests for System Software Updates before, this one is going to allow you to opt-in for future betas automatically. As token of thanks for testing the software and enrolling in the program to receive the updates automatically, Sony is giving away a PSN avatar.
Sony has not announced what features will be coming in Update 5.50.
