The NPD Group has released the sales information concerning the month of January in the United States, revealing that PlayStation 4 was the best selling console during that time. This makes the third consecutive month that Sony’s console takes the top place, since the release of PS4 Pro last November.
But Sony is not the only company celebrating the new numbers, since Microsoft is pleased to say that Xbox One improved its sales on a year-over-year basis. In a press note sent to GamesBeat, the corporate vice president of Xbox Marketing says: “Thanks to continued support by our fans, 2017 is off to a strong start as Xbox One game hours grew 21 percent year-over-year, (…) In addition, in the U.S., Xbox One had its best January to date and was the only eighth generation console that saw growth in January compared to the prior year according to NPD Group. Team Xbox is committed to delivering the best gaming experiences for our fans.”
While no specific sales numbers have been revealed yet, knowing that Xbox One was the only console that improved on January 2016 numbers places both consoles in a range from 150.000 to 230.000 units sold.
PlayStation 4 might not be up year-over year in the US, but it certainly improved its sales on a worldwide scale, considering that in the last quarter it shipped more consoles than any other PlayStation in history, getting closer to the goal of shipping 60 million consoles by next March.
The console is also expected to pull strong sales in the first months of the year thanks to a long list of game exclusives like Nioh, Gravity Rush 2, Kingdom Hearts 2.8, the VR mode of Resident Evil 7 and the upcoming Horizon: Zero Dawn. The introduction of the Glacier White model of PS4 Slim is also expected to bring in some extra hardware sales.
