Quake Champions was one of Bethesda’s bigger surprises during their E3 Showcase in 2016. Debuting the new classically styled shooter was a big surprise aside from the speculation that had run rampant, as usual, before the show. We got to go hands-on with the game at PAX East and came away impressed, and a recent gameplay video showed off a very nice new map. Now we have the Quake Champions Closed Beta release date of April 6th, letting players know when they’ll finally be able to try the game for themselves.
We previously talked about the Quake Champions Closed Beta when it was initially announced. There we laid out how to sign up for the upcoming demo, which simply requires players to click here and enter some basic info. There’s no word on how many players will be allowed into the beta sessions, so there is definitely no guarantee that you’ll get in.
Quake Champions is taking the fast paced and frenetic gameplay of classic shooters and melding it with the class-based gameplay that we’ve seen from more modern games. Players choose from a selection of available Champions, each with their own special ability in combat. This isn’t Overwatch though, and these choices aren’t as integral to the team coordination, at least if our demo was anything to go by.
The shooter genre has dominated gaming for years, and is going through a very interesting time right now. Class based shooters like Overwatch are facing off against classic shooters like Doom and Quake, with Call of Duty and Battlefield still delivering on their more standard offerings. Which one you prefer will likely come down to personal preference, rather than objective assessments of the quality of the genre.
Let us know what shooter you’ve been hooked on lately, and if you’re looking forward tot he Quake Champions Closed Beta in the comments below.
