Naughty Dog were contemplating ending Nathan Drake’s adventures with the third game before Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End came along.

In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine UK (via PowerUpGaming) the game’s creative director Neil Druckmann mentioned the series could have ended back in 2011 with the release if Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Naughty Dog were saying “it was going to be the last one“until they changed their mind and changed the conclusion.

However, both Druckmann and writer Josh Scherr are now admitting that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will truly be the final adventure for Nathan Drake. Druckmann also said it will also be” the end of an era for [Naughty Dog] as a studio“.

Scherr concurred Druckmann’s comments saying that the script is “definitely ending Nathan Drake’s tale“, and that he’s sad that it’s ending. However, he said fans will be satisfied with how Naughty Dog is going to wrap up the Uncharted series. The studio purposefully delayed the game in order to get the finale right.

It will be interesting to see what Naughty Dog decides to do after Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End comes out next year. It’s possible a sequel to The Last of Us could be made, or the studio could introduce everyone to another new IP.
