Xbox 360 Preview Program members just received a new update Tuesday that allows them to send a digital gift cards to others. The natural question to emerge from this announcement is, “what about the Xbox One?”
Director of Programming Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb posted on his blog. The ability to send a digital gift card to friends is currently only available in the United States, Canada, France, Gemany, and the United Kingdom.
“You can send a gift from the Social twist or the Xbox Guide by selecting the profile of the person you want to gift to and then selecting ‘Send Gift’. You will be asked for a gift amount and have an opportunity to confirm the purchase. The gift will be delivered as a token in an Xbox Live message and can be redeemed by the recipient by simply selecting ‘Redeem Code’,” Hyrb explained.
There’s no word on when or if this will be expanded to other countries. There’s also no word on when or if this feature will be added to the Xbox One. Presumably, this is just being test run on the last-gen console while a larger Xbox Store refresh is being worked on for the current-gen. With digital games continually on the rise, Microsoft should make this available on the current-gen console as well.
The ability to gift digital games to others is one of the top suggestions posted by users in the Xbox User Voice community. While the ability to gift money via a digital card isn’t the same, it is the next best thing.
