Kansas man joined a family snorkeling tour in Hawaii, but he is now being held on a $1.57 million bail following a violent incident at sea

A 21-year-old Kansas man is currently facing attempted murder charges after a violent encounter during a snorkeling tour off the Kona coast. Authorities took Avery Nissen into custody on Thursday, April 16, following the incident that occurred on a fishing vessel.

The situation unfolded during a three-hour tour. According to People, the boat captain, 62-year-old Stan Lurbiecki, had taken Nissen along with his mother and a sibling out for the excursion. While the mother and sibling went into the water to snorkel, Nissen opted to stay on the boat. Lurbiecki, who is described as a veteran of the boating industry, began driving the vessel back toward the harbor once the snorkeling portion of the trip concluded.

Things took a turn for the worse when the boat was about 30 minutes away from the harbor. Lurbiecki stated that Nissen grabbed a 10-inch fillet knife from the galley of the boat and attacked him without any provocation. The incident was described by the captain as being “like the most random, wildest, craziest thing you’ll ever hear of.” It’s hard to imagine how a routine tour could escalate into such a dangerous situation so quickly.

Imagine being stuck on that boat when this happened

Other passengers on the boat acted fast and intervened to restrain Nissen during the attack. Their quick thinking likely prevented the situation from becoming even more dire. Officers were waiting when the boat finally reached the Honokōhau Harbor at 3:21 PM on Thursday.

The injuries sustained by Lurbiecki were significant. Police reported that the captain suffered a stab wound to his lower abdomen along with numerous knife cuts to his head and hands. He was transported to the Kona Community Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Lurbiecki mentioned that he required several blood transfusions as part of his medical care.

Captain Lurbiecki’s ordeal highlights the risks maritime leaders face, much like the pressures felt as Iran abruptly reversed course on the Strait of Hormuz. Captains now face everything from onboard violence to international blockades.

Nissen is currently being held on a $1.57 million bail. He faces serious charges, including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. As of now, authorities have not identified a motive for the attack. Nissen is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, April 20. It’s not clear at this time if he has retained an attorney to represent him regarding these charges.

This event is a stark reminder of how quickly things can change on the water. It’s truly a top-tier effort by the other passengers on board to step in and stop the violence before more harm could be done. We’ll have to wait for the court proceedings to learn more about what led to this situation, as the lack of a known motive makes the entire ordeal feel even more baffling. For now, the focus remains on the recovery of the captain as the legal process begins to unfold.

It’s a heavy situation for everyone involved, and the community is certainly keeping an eye on the upcoming court date to see what further details might emerge regarding this incident.
