Popular streamer Felix ‘xQc’ Lengyel recently started a huge online debate. He claimed that most VTubers hide their faces because they look “disgusting” in real life. This harsh comment quickly went viral and got people talking.
According to Dexerto, the Twitch and Kick star didn’t hold back when sharing his opinion. He agreed with fellow streamer The Burnt Peanut and added his own thoughts to the discussion. xQc said he wasn’t trying to be mean or discriminate against anyone, but he truly believes most VTubers would rather show their real faces if they could.
xQc explained that he thinks the vast majority of VTubers would love to be on camera. However, he believes they choose not to because of how they look. “Let’s be honest, most VTubers use VTubing as an excuse not to show themselves because they are disgusting,” he says.
People quickly disagreed with xQc’s take on VTubers
Many viewers jumped in to argue against xQc’s comments. They said VTubers might not be hiding their faces because they’re insecure about their looks. Instead, they simply value their privacy in a world where online harassment happens all the time.
One person commented, “Hard to say, there’s been a lot of facecam-less creators over the years (going back to Cryaotic, Lirik, etc.), often times it’s privacy, or not wanting to deal with public recognition.I think vtubing is similar. Some for sure, but not sure if it’s the majority.”
Online safety and privacy is a major priority for many creators indeed. Staying anonymous while streaming helps creators avoid horrifying incidents that happen to streamers who share too much personal information.
This whole debate actually started from QTCinderella’s Streamer Awards show on December 6. The main issue was about The Burnt Peanut winning the VTuber of the Year award. Some fans and VTubers disagreed with this win because Peanut doesn’t use a full avatar that completely hides his appearance.
Popular VTuber Ironmouse defended Peanut and said he deserved to win. She called him a true VTuber, but this led to harassment directed at both of them. Ironmouse herself recently shared an uncomfortable experience at the Streamer Awards where two influencers asked her personal questions about her ethnicity and appearance.
While streaming controversies continue across platforms, other entertainment news like Trump’s thoughts on the Netflix merger shows how different media figures weigh in on industry debates.
Ironmouse uses VTubing because of a serious health condition that forces her to stay home to avoid infections. Her situation shows that VTubers choose avatars for many different reasons, not just about looks. Some do it for privacy, others for safety, and some for health reasons.
