President Donald Trump has completely changed his mind about releasing files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case. He now wants these documents to be made public, even though he was against this idea before. This change happened right as House Republicans are getting ready to vote on a bill that would make the Justice Department share records from the sex trafficking investigation.
According to Express, the bill would make officials release all files and messages about Epstein. It would also include details about how he died while being held in federal custody. Some information could be hidden to keep Epstein’s victims safe and protect investigations that are still happening. People from both political parties have been asking for this information to be released.
After coming back from a weekend trip to Florida, Trump wrote on Truth Social that “We have nothing to hide, and it’s time to move on from this Democrat Hoax perpetrated by Radical Left Lunatics in order to deflect from the Great Success of the Republican Party.”
Trump realized he was going to lose this fight anyway
Republican Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky has been working hard to get these files released. He thinks the bill has a good chance of passing because around 100 or more Republicans might vote for it.
Massie worked with Democratic Representative Ro Khanna from California to start something called a discharge petition back in July. This is a special move that lets lawmakers force a vote even if their leaders do not want one.
“I’m hoping to get a veto-proof majority on this legislation when it comes up for a vote,” Massie said.
Speaker Mike Johnson did not like this petition at all. He even sent everyone home early for their August break when Republicans started fighting over the Epstein vote. Democrats say that Representative Adelita Grijalva was not allowed to take her seat right away because they wanted to stop her from being the 218th person to sign the petition, which would have forced the vote to happen.
Massie said that Johnson, Trump, and everyone else who tried to stop this effort are going to lose badly this week. He thinks so many Republicans will vote yes that even if Trump tried to veto it, Congress could override him. Trump did know Epstein, and his name showed up in documents that the Justice Department put out in February.
But Trump has never been accused of doing anything wrong related to Epstein. Just because someone’s name appears in investigation papers does not mean they did something bad. Epstein killed himself in jail in 2019 while waiting for his trial. He knew many famous people in politics and entertainment, not just Trump. It looks like Trump decided to support this bill because he realized fighting it was pointless when it was going to pass anyway.
