Kevin Spacey has talked about how he is currently homeless after being accused of sexual assault back in 2018. The 66-year-old actor used to be one of the biggest names in Hollywood, appearing in hit movies like American Beauty, The Usual Suspects, and Se7en.
According to Unilad, his life changed completely in 2018 when several people came forward with sexual assault claims against him. This basically ended his career overnight. Since then, around 30 different people have accused the two-time Oscar winner of sexual assault or acting inappropriately. Spacey has always said these claims are not true. Netflix cancelled his show House of Cards because of the accusations. Spacey, however, was found not guilty of all charges.
Even though he was cleared in court, Spacey is still struggling with money problems. He had to give up his home in Maryland and now stays in hotels and Airbnbs. He told reporters that the past seven years have cost him a huge amount of money. He said he has very little money coming in but lots of bills to pay. All his belongings are now sitting in storage, and he hopes that if things get better, he can finally pick a place to live again.
His lifestyle is very different now
The difference between his old life and now is pretty big. Spacey used to make over $500,000 for each episode of House of Cards. These days, he travels around doing small performances wherever he can find work. Just this week, he did a show at a resort in Cyprus where tickets cost between $290 and $1,400.
Spacey has been thinking about his past and why people saw him in a certain way. “Why was I such a good villain, why did I fit so well into a narrative that was out there? And some of those were important questions for me to ask, to take accountability for where I made mistakes,” he said.
“I suppose when I look back, I wish I had spoken out sooner and allowed my voice to be heard more.”. Other veteran actors like Gene Hackman have also stepped away from the spotlight in recent years, though under different circumstances.
He said his situation now reminds him of when he was just starting out in acting. Back then, he would go anywhere the work was, and that is exactly what he is doing now. His show in Cyprus was advertised as a special night where he would sing and tell stories. Meanwhile, actors such as Tom Hanks continue to work in theater and film, showing that career longevity in entertainment can take many forms.
Even with all his problems, Spacey still believes he can make a comeback. He thinks everything could change fast if a famous director decides to work with him. He said if someone like Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino calls his manager tomorrow, his time away from Hollywood would be over. This shows he is still holding onto hope that he can return to making big movies again.
