Steve Rogers returning in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is the best thing to happen to the MCU, and the backlash proves fans are missing the point

Hear me out, Marvel fans

Chris Evans is coming back to the MCU as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday, and many fans are upset about it. However, their complaints don’t make sense when you look at the bigger picture. This decision is actually one of the best things Marvel could do right now, and it fits perfectly with the story.

Steve Rogers hasn’t been seen since his emotional goodbye in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. After saving the universe, he went back in time to return the Infinity Stones but decided to stay in the past to live a peaceful life with Peggy Carter. It was a perfect ending for his character. Now, leaked footage from the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser confirms that Steve will have a major role in the movie and must leave that peaceful life to fight again.

Many fans are excited to see the original Avenger return, but others are angry. They believe Marvel said Steve was gone forever, and now the studio is bringing him back just for another big movie. Critics claim Steve’s return will ruin two important things: the emotional impact of his Endgame goodbye and Sam Wilson’s role as the new Captain America. According to The Direct, both arguments are wrong.

The controversy around his return misses the real story

First, people say forcing Steve to leave the past destroys the meaning of his ending. But this take ignores the obvious truth: if Steve has to leave, it’s his own fault. The MCU needs to show the consequences of his actions. Just like how public figures must address their mistakes when things go wrong, sometimes heroes must face the results of their choices.

Tony Stark warned everyone in Avengers: Endgame that messing with time has consequences. The Avengers saw this immediately when their time travel brought Thanos to the present. Steve messed with time again by staying in the past, but we never saw what happened because of that choice.

Steve shouldn’t get to change the timeline without facing any consequences. His return isn’t Marvel ruining his ending: it’s basic cause and effect. If his decision to stay in the past somehow helped Doctor Doom start the Multiversal war, then Steve made a terrible mistake. In that case, he should definitely help fix the problem he created.

The second complaint is that Steve’s return will overshadow Sam Wilson as Captain America. Fans are worried about this, but it’s overblown and depends on how Marvel handles it. Steve’s presence will likely make Sam’s position as Captain America even stronger. There will probably be a scene where Sam tries to give the shield back, but Steve will refuse.

The older Steve told Sam the Captain America title belonged to him, and Steve would never break that promise. Dave Chappelle’s recent story about a bizarre night at Diddy’s house reminds us how celebrities sometimes face unexpected situations, but the core point remains clear. Steve will return as just “Steve Rogers,” not as Captain America. He’ll keep his super-soldier powers and character traits, but he won’t interfere with Sam’s role.

We’ve seen this before in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield didn’t overshadow Tom Holland; they helped him grow stronger. Marvel has a good reason for bringing Steve Rogers back. Much like Amazon pulling its controversial Prime Video feature after intense backlash, studios listen to feedback. Until Avengers: Doomsday releases, we should trust that this decision will make the Multiverse Saga much more interesting.
