Copies of old Star Wars racing game are now selling for hundreds of dollars after players discover what it can do to a PS5

Got nothing to do with nostalgia.

A PlayStation 4 copy of Star Wars Racer Revenge, a racing game originally released in 2002, has suddenly skyrocketed in price, now selling for hundreds of dollars. The surge comes after hackers discovered the game could be used to jailbreak the PlayStation 5. The PS2 classic was re-released for PS4 by Limited Run Games in 2019, but only recently did players realize its potential in circumventing Sony’s security measures on the newest console.

According to Engadget, the key lies in the PS4 version’s Hall of Fame feature, which contains a bug that allows hackers to insert custom code into PS5 consoles running firmware version 12.00. Since the PS5 is backward-compatible with PS4 discs, the physical version of Star Wars Racer Revenge has become an essential tool for those attempting the jailbreak.

Physical copies are particularly prized in these situations because they cannot be patched or updated like digital versions, making them a stable medium for exploits. When the PS4 edition first hit shelves, it cost between $14.99 and $37.50. Now, demand from the hacking community has sent used copies up to $411 on eBay. Sellers are quickly raising prices, capitalizing on the sudden rush from enthusiasts looking to gain full control over their PS5 systems.

Limited Run Games only made 8,500 copies total

The skyrocketing price is also fueled by the game’s rarity. Limited Run Games produces re-releases of older titles in very limited quantities, marketing them as collectible items. According to the company’s records, only 8,500 copies of Star Wars Racer Revenge were ever made for PS4, making it difficult to track down even before the jailbreak news broke.

Now, with the game in high demand for PS5 jailbreaking, scarcity has collided with necessity. With so few copies in circulation, sellers have the freedom to charge premium prices, turning what was once a largely forgotten racing game into one of the most sought-after PS4 titles almost overnight.

The sudden shift underscores how quickly collector and tech communities can transform the value of a niche item.Sony has been working on new AI technology for content moderation in gaming recently.

Most buyers aren’t interested in playing the game itself. They just need it to hack their consoles. This sudden use in jailbreaking has turned a cheap old game into an expensive tool. As long as people want to jailbreak their PS5s, the price will likely stay high. In other news, a PS5 owner recently discovered a hidden setting that’s been consuming storage space for years without most users realizing it.
