Senator Elizabeth Warren is now escalating the intense political battle over immigration enforcement, demanding that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem resign immediately or face impeachment proceedings in Congress, as reported by The Hill. Warren’s strong call for Noem’s removal centers on the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs hospital.
Pretti was shot by a Border Patrol agent during a demonstration protesting the government’s immigration enforcement efforts, and the senator alleges that Secretary Noem has lied to the American people about the details of the incident. The official story from DHS was horrific right out of the gate. Shortly after the shooting, officials were quick to accuse Pretti of wanting to “massacre law enforcement” and “murder federal agents.”
Bystander video footage appears to strongly dispute the official narrative. Pretti, who was licensed to carry a concealed weapon, wasn’t actually seen holding his firearm at any point in the interaction in the available footage. Instead, the video seems to show an agent taking the concealed weapon from Pretti’s waistband moments before another agent shot him in the back.
That difference is huge, and it’s understandable why people are demanding transparency
The Massachusetts senator didn’t mince words, making it clear she thinks President Trump and Secretary Noem are trying to cover up serious wrongdoing. “Kristi Noem should resign, and if she doesn’t, Congress should impeach her and remove her from office,” Warren stated in a video posted Monday to the social platform X. “In America, we still believe in accountability, not lies.”
Warren said, “Donald Trump and Kristi Noem think that they can tell you what to believe. They think you will believe them instead of your own eyes. Don’t roll over for a lie. These lies have to stop.” She insists Congress needs to “rein in the federal agents who think they can swagger through our streets, throw people to the ground, shoot American citizens, and then count on protection from Trump and Noem.”
Warren concluded by saying, “We need a full, independent investigation and all wrongdoing held to account to the fullest extent of the law, the victims of this violence deserve justice.” Of course, DHS isn’t just going to take that lying down. Tricia Laughlin, an assistant secretary at DHS, fired back immediately, dismissing the impeachment calls. She stated that “DHS enforces the laws Congress passes, period. If certain members don’t like those laws, changing them is literally their job.”
Laughlin shifted the focus entirely away from the specific shooting incident and onto the dangers faced by enforcement officers. She claims that ICE officers are seeing a “staggering 1,300% spike in assaults.” Laughlin strongly criticized politicians who are attacking the department, suggesting that “too many politicians would rather defend criminals and attack the men and women who are enforcing our laws.”
She also took a political swipe at the previous administration, saying these critics “did nothing while Joe Biden facilitated an invasion of tens of millions of illegal aliens into our country.” The assistant secretary concluded that Congress needs to “focus on protecting the American people,” which is the work the Department is doing every day under Secretary Noem’s leadership.
