President Trump didn’t hold back his thoughts about the Super Bowl Halftime Show. He quickly went to Truth Social to criticize Bad Bunny’s performance on February 8. The president called it “absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER!”
According to Deadline, he said the performance made “no sense” and was an “affront to the Greatness of America.” Trump claimed it didn’t represent the country’s standards of “Success, Creativity, or Excellence.” He mainly complained about the language barrier since Bad Bunny performs mostly in Spanish. “Nobody understands a word this guy is saying,” Trump wrote.
The president also attacked the choreography. He said “the dancing is disgusting, especially for young children that are watching from throughout the U.S.A., and all over the World.” Trump called the show a “slap in the face” to the country. He then switched topics to talk about the economy, pointing out the U.S. is “setting new standards and records every single day” with the “Best Stock Market and 401(k)s in History!”
Trump’s criticism extended beyond music to demand major NFL rule changes
Trump didn’t stop at criticizing the music. He used his post to demand a big sports rule change. The president insisted the NFL should “immediately replace its ridiculous new Kickoff Rule.” He wanted both a musical change and a fundamental change to football rules in one post.
Bad Bunny’s performance included his biggest hits in Spanish and honored Puerto Rico, which is part of the United States. He ended his performance by saying “God Bless America.” Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917, though they can’t vote for president or have voting representation in Congress. This isn’t the first time Trump has faced criticism over controversial posts on social media.
Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, had already hinted the president wouldn’t like the show. She said he would “much prefer a Kid Rock performance over Bad Bunny.” This set a clear expectation for what kind of music the White House wanted to see during the biggest TV event of the year.
California Governor Gavin Newsom had the opposite reaction. He praised the performance on X, writing “America, the beautiful. THANK YOU, BAD BUNNY.” The show clearly divided the audience, as Super Bowl Halftime Shows often do. Trump has previously made calls for Republicans to control voting ahead of major elections.
Trump ended his comments by going after the media. He predicted the show would “get great reviews from the Fake News Media.” He said the media doesn’t have “a clue of what is going on in the REAL WORLD.” The president signed off with “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
