Protest at NYC Mayor’s residence takes chilling turn as authorities reveal a potentially deadly weapon was involved

This is what hate escalates to.

New York City Police revealed on Sunday that a device ignited and thrown during weekend protests outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home was an explosive that could have caused serious injury or death, as reported by Reuters. This is an incredibly serious development, and it’s a huge relief that it didn’t fully detonate.

The device was described as a jar filled with nuts, bolts, and screws, all wrapped in black tape with a fuse. It was thrown by a counterprotester on Saturday outside Gracie Mansion, where Mayor Mamdani lives with his wife. Thankfully, it extinguished itself before any explosion could occur, according to a statement from New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Police have confirmed that Emir Balat, 18, was among the counterprotesters and was the one who lit and threw the device. The device rolled near police before it went out. Balat then reportedly ran after throwing it and later lit and dropped a second device in the street. Balat and another man, Ibrahim Kayumi, were arrested at the scene. New York police are now working closely with the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice on the ongoing investigation.

The hateful rhetoric against Mamdani has been rampant in follow up to this incident

The incident happened amidst two opposing protest groups. Far-right activist Jake Lang led a protest outside Gracie Mansion, speaking out against what he called an “Islamic takeover” of New York City and against public prayer by Muslims.

This group consisted of about 20 people. Opposing Lang’s demonstration was a much larger counterprotest, with about 125 people, whose aim was to “run Nazis out of New York.” Commissioner Tisch stated on Saturday that she did not believe Mayor Mamdani and his wife were home at the time of the incident.

Mayor Mamdani issued a statement on Sunday, condemning Lang’s protest but expressing even greater disturbance by the violence that followed. He emphasized that violence at a protest is never acceptable. The mayor called the attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others not only criminal but also reprehensible, stating it’s completely antithetical to the values of the city.

Authorities are still looking into all aspects of the incident. Commissioner Tisch mentioned on Saturday that there was no immediate indication the event was related to the U.S. attack on Iran, but that investigation is still underway.
