The US military’s casualty count continues to skyrocket, and they’ve lost a staggering number of its most advanced drones as well

The U.S. military just updated its casualty figures, confirming about 200 troops have been wounded and a staggering dozen advanced MQ-9 Reaper drones have been lost as the conflict against Iran enters its third week, as reported by Reuters. This rise in casualties and equipment losses really highlights the intense nature of the ongoing hostilities.

Central Command announced that the majority of those wounded troops sustained minor injuries, which is a small comfort. In fact, 180 of them have already returned to duty. However, ten of the reported injuries are serious. These troops were injured across a wide area, including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain, Iraq, and Israel, painting a clear picture of the widespread impact of Iranian strikes.

Beyond the wounded, the conflict has also tragically claimed the lives of thirteen U.S. troops since Iran launched its initial strikes against U.S. military bases on February 28. Just last week, we heard reports of around 150 troops wounded, so seeing that number jump to 200 really underscores the escalating risks.

Now, let’s talk about the hardware. A U.S. official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that about a dozen MQ-9 Reaper drones have been destroyed in the war. Losing even one of these advanced unmanned aerial vehicles is a significant setback, but a dozen? That’s a massive blow to our reconnaissance and strike capabilities.

The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper is a beast, capable of loitering at altitudes of around 50,000 feet for over 27 hours. Think about that: almost a day and a half in the air, gathering intelligence with incredibly sophisticated cameras, sensors, and radars. It’s a top-tier asset for keeping an eye on things and, when necessary, can be equipped with air-to-ground missiles. This drone has been a workhorse for the U.S. Air Force for 16 years, so these losses are a huge deal.

The conflict kicked off with Iranian strikes against U.S. military bases, but their attacks haven’t stopped there. We’ve also seen Iranian actions hit diplomatic missions, hotels, and airports, and they’ve even damaged energy infrastructure across various Arab Gulf states. It’s a wide-ranging campaign, to say the least. On our side, the United States has been busy, too, carrying out strikes against more than 7,000 targets within Iran in response.
