Melania Trump’s appearance at the Kennedy Center has sparked speculation again, with many users on X convinced that a body double accompanied President Trump to the opening night of the musical Chicago. The event took place on Tuesday, March 31, at the performing arts center, now known as the Trump Kennedy Center.
As the couple made their way to their seats, the reaction inside the venue quickly revealed a split crowd. Videos circulating on social media capture a wave of applause from some sections, while others responded with audible boos.
According to The Irish Star, online attention quickly shifted from the crowd’s reaction to Melania herself. She was wearing an all-white dress with fringe details, and her smile next to President Trump caught people’s attention, sparking a fresh round of body double conspiracy theories.
Body double theories about Melania have been circulating since 2017
One person said, “You see the gal that looks like Melania. It is the double. When have we ever seen a smile like that from the real Melania? Never.” Another X user remarked, “Wow. Is that Trump with a Melania body double. Hasn’t Trump torn down the Kennedy Center yet? Wasn’t he supposed to turn it into a Costco and Casino? Where are the Epstein files and who pushed Trumplef— into starting a war. Netanyahu or the Arabs?”
This comes at a time when Trump’s public support has been steadily declining, adding more pressure to his public appearances. This is not the first time Melania has been at the center of such theories. Last month, she was mocked online for wearing sunglasses in the middle of the night, with some suggesting she wore them to hide her true identity.
According to The Mirror, Melania was again seen wearing sunglasses after dark earlier in February, which reignited more replacement theories. The body double conspiracy actually traces back to 2017, when columnist Marina Hyde is credited with starting it. She wrote, “Absolutely convinced Melania is being played by a Melania impersonator these days. Theory: she left him weeks ago.”
The Kennedy Center has become a familiar venue for the Trumps. This visit for Chicago could be one of their last for a while, as President Trump has plans to close the venue for a two-year renovation project scheduled to begin in July. Around the same time, Trump has been making aggressive threats toward Iran’s infrastructure, keeping his administration in the headlines for multiple reasons.
The Trumps have made several appearances at the Kennedy Center over the past year. Their trip for Chicago was their first time there together since the premiere of the Amazon documentary Melania in January. Before that, the couple attended the opening night of Les Misérables last summer, where they were also met with boos from parts of the audience.
Even before it was released to the public, the documentary Melania had become a widely debated film. The Amazon MGM Studios release, which covers the roughly 20 days leading up to President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, arrived with a record-breaking budget, an unusually intense promotional push, and a host of ethical, political, and cultural questions.
Much of the debate around the film focuses less on its content and more on the circumstances of its creation and release. The rights to Melania reportedly cost Amazon MGM Studios $40 million, setting a record for the most expensive documentary acquisition ever. Combined with around $35 million spent on worldwide marketing, the total outlay approaches $75 million, a figure usually reserved for big-budget feature films.
For context, most well-regarded political documentaries cost under $5 million to produce, sometimes under difficult logistical circumstances. According to Rolling Stone and Axios, Melania Trump is believed to have received approximately $28 million, or 70 percent of the licensing fee, a legal arrangement that nonetheless raised eyebrows given her position in the White House.
