Spirit Airlines closed operations this weekend, now a man is crowdfunding to buy the whole company and he’s already raised $23 million

Spirit Airlines has officially ceased all operations, marking the end of a 33-year run for one of the most prominent low-cost carriers in the United States. This sudden shutdown, which took effect over the weekend, has left nearly 17,000 employees in limbo and thousands of passengers stranded across the country. The final scheduled service for the airline touched down in Dallas, bringing a definitive halt to a company that had struggled with financial instability and multiple bankruptcy filings over the last two years.

The collapse of the airline was not entirely unexpected, given the mounting pressure from rising operating expenses. Company leadership specifically pointed to the surging cost of jet fuel, which became increasingly difficult to manage following geopolitical tensions linked to the Iran conflict. Because the business model of an ultra-low-cost carrier relies so heavily on lean operations and narrow profit margins, these external cost shocks proved to be fatal. Without the ability to secure necessary government funding, the company determined there was no viable path forward to keep their planes in the air.

In the midst of this chaotic shutdown, a surprising effort has emerged to save the company through the power of the crowd. As reported by BroBible, a man has launched a campaign with the goal of having the people own the airline. He reasoned that with more than 250 million adults in the United States, a collective effort could potentially bridge the gap left by the lack of government support. “Ok I had a genius idea, Spirit Airlines just went bankrupt…there;s over 250 million individuals over the age of 18 in the United States, and if we took the average fare of a Spirit Airlines flight, which is somewhere around $30-$40, we could buy Spirit Airlines.”

The response to this proposal of buying Spirit Airlines was immediate and overwhelming

Within just one day, the campaign managed to secure nearly $23 million in pledges. The surge in interest was so intense that it crashed the website, forcing the organizer to pause the collection of funds. “Okay, websites, very broken. built that in like an hour and like, it’s terrible It’s like, not good. So if you’re a developer, please reach out. Oh my God, I don’t have any money right now. Again, trying to figure this out. Two, as soon as that’s fixed, we’re gonna turn on the pledges again.”

While $23 million is an impressive start, the reality of the situation is that the organizer has a massive mountain to climb. Spirit Airlines was actively seeking a $500 million bailout from the government just to maintain basic operations and cover employee payroll. Reaching that goal will require a significantly larger effort than what has been seen so far. It is a fascinating, if ambitious, attempt to leverage public interest to solve a massive corporate insolvency issue.

For the passengers who were caught in the middle of this transition, the situation has been incredibly difficult. Many travelers arrived at airports only to discover that their flights were canceled, with no clear path to rebooking.

The company issued a statement regarding the closure: “It is with great disappointment that Spirit Airlines has started winding down its global operations, effective immediately. All flights have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available. While we are not able to help rebook your flight on another airline, we will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry for the last 33 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.”

While the airline has stated that most card-based refunds are being processed, the uncertainty has forced other carriers like United Airlines and JetBlue to step in with rescue fares. These temporary measures are designed to help stranded passengers reach their destinations, but they do not solve the broader issue of the airline’s total operational collapse.

The workforce impact is equally severe, with approximately 17,000 employees facing an uncertain future. While about 1,500 crew members have managed to return home, many others remain in transit or are struggling to coordinate their return as the company winds down its affairs.

This event serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of the aviation industry when faced with volatile fuel costs and operational pressures. The failure of such a large carrier highlights the difficulty of maintaining the ultra-low-cost model in a modern economy where external factors can quickly erode any financial buffer.

Whether the crowdfunding attempt can actually gain enough momentum to change the outcome for the company remains to be seen, but it is certainly a unique chapter in the history of commercial aviation. For now, the focus remains on the logistical nightmare of managing the aftermath of the closure and ensuring that the thousands of affected staff and passengers are accounted for during this transition.
