Armed veteran fled into the Tennessee woods after allegedly trying to kill his wife, but a trail camera discovery has triggered a dire warning

A massive search operation is currently underway across rural Tennessee as federal and state agencies work to locate a military-trained fugitive. Craig Berry, a 44-year-old retired Special Forces veteran, is the subject of an urgent manhunt after he allegedly shot his wife during a domestic altercation. The incident occurred at a residence near Old Paris Highway early Sunday morning, and officials are now treating the suspect as highly dangerous.

According to Fox News, deputies arrived at the scene around 1:30 AM following reports of the shooting. While emergency responders transported the victim to a hospital, the suspect had already fled into the dense surrounding woodlands. Because of his specialized military background, authorities are particularly concerned about his ability to survive in the wilderness.

He is reportedly well-versed in survival tactics and maintains a deep familiarity with the rugged terrain spanning the Tennessee-Kentucky border. As Sheriff Gray noted, “He is very familiar with the area.” The search has grown significantly since the initial call. It now involves the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

The search zone has expanded from the original site near Old Paris Highway to include Gray’s Landing and the corridors along highways 232 and 79. Investigators are dealing with a difficult situation because they believe Berry does not have a phone or any electronic devices, which makes tracking him through digital means impossible. A major breakthrough in the investigation came when a trail camera captured an image of Berry wearing camouflage clothing.

This discovery has prompted officials to issue a direct request to property owners in the region. They are asking residents to check their own trail cameras for any signs of the fugitive, as it is likely he is still moving through wooded areas to evade capture. The sheriff’s office stated, “We have no information that he is no longer in the area.” Law enforcement officials have described Berry as physically fit and capable of navigating both difficult terrain and local waterways.

They have noted that he is a strong swimmer and diver, which adds another layer of complexity to the search efforts. Because he is believed to be armed with at least one handgun and is carrying additional ammunition, authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution. This case highlights how domestic disputes can escalate into deadly violence, much like when a former Virginia Lt. Gov. killed his wife before taking his own life.

They have advised residents to keep their doors locked and to remain vigilant. The sheriff’s office announced a shift in tactical operations, scaling back broad sweeps of the woods to prepare for more targeted searches based on specific leads. Investigators are also keeping an open mind regarding the possibility that Berry may be receiving assistance from someone outside of the immediate area.

The K-9 units last tracked the suspect near River Trace Road, but officials admitted they no longer have a definitive sense of his current location. This is a top-tier security concern for the region, given his training and potential for violence. If you happen to spot Berry, you should not attempt to approach him under any circumstances.

You must call 911 immediately to report his location to the authorities. Stay alert and keep your property secure while this situation remains active.
