Teen swiped a Chicago street singer’s tip box mid-song, but what the thief’s mom did after the video went viral surprised everyone

The mother of a teenage boy who stole a tip bucket from a Chicago street performer has taken full responsibility, repaying the singer for his lost earnings and adding extra on top. As detailed by CBS News Chicago and Dexerto, the incident took place on the corner of State and Madison on Monday, May 4. The performer, Andrew David, is a regular fixture in the Chicago Loop, where he entertains crowds with his singing.

During his performance, David was mid-song when a masked teenager grabbed his tip bucket and fled. Despite the theft, David finished his set and later noted that the song he happened to be performing helped him keep his composure. “I had a pretty calm reaction because there’s not much you can do,” he told CBS Chicago. “I definitely think the song I happened to be singing helped me just kind of be like, ‘Well, that’s alright.'”

The incident was captured on an iPad David uses to record his performances. In the footage, he calmly asks the teen to return the container but does not give chase, joking that he is too old to be running after thieves in the city. Instead of going to the police, David posted the video to social media.

The mom didn’t just apologize, she went out of her way to make it right

The video spread quickly across platforms, and viewers were able to identify the teen as a student at Innovations High School. This prompted David to visit the school and speak with the principal, amid a broader wave of viral moments drawing public attention to everyday social media clips, including a recent viral restaurant dispute in Arizona. The school visit led to an unexpected outcome.

The student’s mother reached out to David, apologized, and arranged a meeting where she repaid the stolen amount along with additional money. David recalled that she even gave him a tour of the school. “She gave me a tour of the school. They replaced what I lost and then some, which was really nice,” he said.

David had noticed the group of teens passing by his spot earlier that day and mentioned they had made some comments as they walked by, though nothing significant happened at that point. He has since stated he does not want to pursue criminal charges and views the incident as a potential turning point for the teen. “I just hopes that all this attention and, like, social media, like, can just make it a learning experience for him,” he said.

Community response to the resolution has been largely supportive. On Instagram, one commenter wrote, “This is perfect example for our young generation,” while another added, “Much respect for him not going to the police and letting this be a learning experience.” The story also drew comparisons to other cases of overnight social media attention, not unlike how Ronaldo’s Instagram follower count became a major talking point this week.

Although the tip bucket was eventually returned to David by a stranger, it was empty. The financial loss was covered by the student’s mother, and David has reflected on the ordeal with measured perspective. “[It was] frustrating for the people that had already donated, for the time that I had spent. But we make that back. Life is funny that way.”
