Tragic cases led by parents’ negligence, like an abandoned toddler who lost his life due to hunger, often break us after making headlines. Speaking of that, a similar incident has taken place in Pennsylvania, where a mother left his children unsupervised at home. She reportedly left for a drug deal, and in her absence, a fire at home ended up taking the lives of her children, who were home alone.
According to People, a 22-year-old woman named Danozjna Shalita Marjie Williams left her three children at home for almost an hour while she was gone to finalize an alleged drug deal. The three children included 3-year-old Da’Liyla, 5-year-old Tobias Huff, and 5-month-old Amirah Al-Mansouri, as reported by Your Erie. Williams has been charged with third-degree murder, endangering the welfare of children, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering another person, as reported in a news release by the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.
Elizabeth Hirz, Erie County District Attorney, said, “This is a heartbreaking, but completely preventable tragedy. The evidence shows these young children were left without supervision in a situation where they needed their mother to protect them and keep them safe. That duty was abandoned, with devastating consequences.”
The deaths could have been prevented, but firefighters faced difficulty in getting into the house
It was reported that the children were found in a bedroom upstairs. The fire started in the kitchen, and it spread to every room. Firefighters said they might have entered the house in time to save the children, but a couch at the door blocked their entry. They had to use another door to enter, and once they entered, the stairway was blocked by a mattress.
The Eerie Fire Department issued a warning during the fire to keep neighbors safe from the flames. They detailed the whole incident in their Facebook post, stating, “With heavy hearts, we report that two lives were lost in a structure fire today. A third victim was flown to Pittsburgh and remains in serious condition. Crews arrived quickly, put water on the fire, and made three rescues under extremely challenging conditions. Despite their heroic efforts, two victims succumbed to their injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragedy.”
A House fire claiming the lives of children was also reported previously. Happened on Thanksgiving in Wisconsin, a father reportedly ignored malfunctioning smoke alarms. But the consequences turned tragic when a house fire ended the lives of his three children. The father, Joshua Kanin, was then charged with child neglect.
Coming back to this incident, the mother, Williams, whose negligence has been declared as the sole reason for the death of the children, has been arrested and is due to face the trial for her behavior. Even though she has not been convicted of the crime yet, the serious charges can get her sentenced to a long term in prison. Apart from her absence, if safety precautions had been taken, such as basic child safety and fire prevention measures, the situation would have been very different.
