Alienware Steam Machine not upgradeable, new versions will launch yearly

Alienware will likely be one of the more popular Steam Machines when their first offering comes to market in 2014. Comparably priced with consoles from Sony and Microsoft, this custom PC build will not be upgradeable like PCs have traditionally been.

The company plans to upgrade hardware every year as games become more resource intensive. A recent interview between Frank Azor and Trusted Reviews outlines this policy.

“There will be some configuration options when you purchase it,” said Azor, “maybe you can get a faster CPU, maybe some more memory something like that. But, when it comes to getting new parts into the machine.. there will be no customisation options, you can’t really update it.”

From what it sounds like, the Alienware Steam Machine isn’t for the PC enthusiast who wants to get hands-on with the guts of the machine. Currently, it’s unclear at what price point the Alienware Steam Machine will launch at, but it will likely have multiple price points as Azor suggested.
