Sony’s PlayStation 4 has sold the most consoles in North America for the sixth straight month, according to NPD data for June.  Hardware as a whole is saw a considerable jump of over 100% year over year, with console hardware seeing a jump of over 200%.

Sony’s notes that the PS4 was not only number one in hardware sales, but the PS4 was also the leader in software sales with two out of the top three titles.  Watch Dogs, UFC, and FIFA 14 were all selling better on the PS4 compared to other platforms.

Nintendo also issued a statement on the recent NPD data.  The company says that sales of hardware and software for June 14 were up 233 percent and 373 percent respectively, over June 13.  They also added that Wii U sales are on the rise when looking at the first half of 2014 over 2013.  They did not specify how many consoles they sold in June, but with Mario Kart being such a big seller on the software side of things, its conceivable that it sold some Wii U systems.

Apparently, everyone is getting a piece of the pie between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo.  Microsoft preemptively announced that sales of the Xbox One doubled in June over May with the price cut for the console. While it wasn’t enough to propel it past the PS4, NPD data suggests that the combined sales for the Xbox One and PS4 are significantly higher than the Xbox 360 and PS3 were at the same point in the previous generation.  The figures also suggest a drop-off in sales of portable gaming hardware.

On the software side of things, Watch Dogs and Mario Kart were the big sellers in June.  Minecraft on the Xbox 360 and PS3, EA Sports UFC, and FIFA 14 were the top five sellers for June.  Software sales didn’t see the same boost as hardware on a year over year basis.  Software sales as a whole were down 3% from June ’13.
