Sony Says PS Vita Is Here To Stay With Focus On Smaller Games

The PS Vita launched about two and a half years ago in the US and still hasn’t managed to attract much of a following. The handheld has offered some very impressive titles in the past, such as games from the Uncharted and Killzone series, but has struggled in sales, even with the push of the connectivity with the PlayStation 4. Many thought we might be seeing Sony give up on the handheld sooner rather than later, but Sony is saying quite the opposite.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Sony UK head Fergal Gara said that while the handheld hasn’t sold as well as the PlayStation 4, they are still happy with its very consistent sales. With Minecraft about to hit the handheld soon, Gara believes that will propel the PS Vita even further, and that it will be here to stay moving forward.

“There’s a perception that it’s fading away. I can absolutely assure you that that’s not happening. It’s proving remarkably resilient. We enter the peak season very optimistic about hitting similar or bigger numbers to last year. So we feel in good shape.”

Gara did say that they are focusing more on smaller titles that could compete with the mobile gaming market than big titles like the previously mentioned AAA games like Uncharted and Killzone for the PS Vita. This might be a good strategy for Sony, but I do hope to see some major series games on the handheld eventually if sales pick up.
