Sony might be setting the price for the PlayStation VR headset so people can afford it as the company does not plan on making a profit from it at launch.
Digital Spy had a chance to interview Shuhei Yoshida who is the head of SCE Worldwide Studios. Sony does not plan on making a profit from the PlayStation VR headset in the short term.
He said: “We tend to price hardware not to make money from it but to get as many install base so that content can be sold“. He went on to say that this is the same mentality the company has for PlayStation VR.
Sony’s goal in the short term is to get people interested in VR gaming. The company is not able to do this if the headset is too expensive because nobody would buy it. It also has to make VR gaming attractive unlike how Nintendo treated the Virtual Boy back in the ’90s…
Yoshida’s comments are a sign that the PlayStation VR headset might not be too expensive for gamers to buy. Sony wants to increase the install base for VR gaming first. It will be interesting to see what price point Sony settles for.
