Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past Likely Wouldn’t Have Been Localized Without Nintendo

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is set to release on Friday for the 3DS after a few years of wondering if it would even be localized in the US. This remake of the PS1 title came out in Japan in 2013, and it sounds like there was a good chance that the game would have never been localized if it wasn’t for a little help from a big supporter.

In an interview with Nintendo Life, Dragon Quest VII producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto discussed the upcoming release of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past and how happy he was that this game is finally getting released in the US.

Fujimoto stated that the large numbers of letters and petitions that they got to localize the game did have an impact, but then he was asked how much Nintendo was involved with the development process, in which he said:

“The sheer translation volume of Dragon Quest VII is more than 2 times Dragon Quest V, so it’s a gigantic game. It was really hard to make the business decision to localize the game. With Nintendo, we were able to work it out and work hand-in-hand and make it happen together. To be completely blunt, it’s like Nintendo took half of the bill!”

Considering that we absolutely loved the game, as you can see in our review, we are very thankful that Nintendo stepped in and helped get this game localized. Hopefully this game, as well as the remake of Dragon Quest VIII, will sell well so that there’s no question as to bring Dragon Quest XI to the states.
