After progressing the story in Tales of Berseria to the point where you meet the pirate Eizen, you will find that you have the new ability to embark on Ship Voyages. These voyages are events that happen off-screen while you are going about your regular business, but they have the potential to net you some valuable rewards. This guide will get you up and running when it comes to initiating these voyages.
How they work is you send out your ship to one of the locations that appear on the menu (it starts with one before quickly adding more), and then the ship and its crew will be gone for 30 minutes and will be involved with 3 battles. When they come back they will have items for you, and these items range from treasure, cooking ingredients, TL coins and more. The amount of items that the crew brings back depends on how many of the 3 battles they end up winning, though the outcomes are out of your hands.
It’s also worth noting that the 30 minutes that the crew is gone is real-time and not in-game time, so you can just leave the system for 30 minutes (or manually speed up the PS4’s clock) and then come back to your rewards. Battles that you take part in while the crew is out on a voyage will also reduce the timer by 30 seconds, so if you’re in an area where you can quickly dispatch enemies this will be a good way to reduce the time.
On top of all of this are the voyage skills, which are unlocked when the crew finds treasure. A random voyage skill will be activated whenever you set out on a voyage and the skill is tied to a specific character, and if that member happens to leave the party then those skills will no longer be available. As for what they can do, they largely involve things like finding more items or shortening the voyage time.
As you embark on more and more voyages you will slowly build up experience points that will increase your voyage skill level, which is impacted by how many of the 3 battles you win with each voyage. Getting your voyage skill level to 15 (or higher) and progressing the game will eventually have your crew inform you of a new island they saw on a voyage, which will then allow you to go to Normin Island.
Seeing as embarking on voyages costs nothing and is done outside of the actual gameplay, it would be in your best interest to ensure that your crew is constantly on a voyage. You’ll get a notification when they return, and once you’ve gotten the report you can immediately send them out on another one. Be sure to do this as soon as the ability to do so arises, as it will get you plenty of helpful items and the ability explore new areas.
