Sonic Mania hits PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on Tuesday, August 15th. That list is missing one platform though: PC. The PC release was scheduled for the same date, but was suddenly delayed today via a livestream. The new Sonic Mania PC release date will be August 29th, giving the team a couple more weeks to polish the experience.
Polish seemed to be the main reason for the delay, with Sega saying that they simply needed some more time to get the game working properly on PC. “We are not going to put out a game that is not the best it can be,” Sonic community manager Aaron Webber said. “And we’re going to maintain that level of quality and consistency and dedication to that quality. It is so important to us.”
Luckily, those who preordered the game won’t be totally disappointed by this delay. To make up for the longer than anticipated wait, those buyers will receive a free copy of the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
What’s really interesting is that the PC Collector’s Edition of Sonic Mania will still ship out on August 15th. There isn’t a physical game inside though, rather it’s a code for Steam. Using this code will add the game to your library, but it won’t be available until the 29th.
Sonic Mania is a 2D game, but it is taking the franchise in some new and interesting directions. The Sonic series has always ebbed and flowed in terms of quality, but this latest release has a lot of fans excited for what’s to come.
