A new kind of label has been spotted by PC gamers over on Valve’s Steam platform, as “PlayStation PC” has now officially replaced the “Playstation Mobile” label that was previously used for some of the recent Playstation to PC ports. Sony seems to be going all-in when it comes to their support for the PC platform, as they have been revealing and announcing various Playstation 4 titles that were once exclusive to their platform as PC titles via Valve’s Steam service. These titles included Horizon: Zero Dawn, Days Gone, and Death Stranding, which were ported to the PC roughly two years or more after their PS4 debuts.
While the announcement for this label wasn’t made public in a press release, this news has been seen coming along for quite some time, as corporate filings for Playstation PC LLC were made sometime back on Tuesday, April 13th, 2021. They have also mentioned in a Q&A blog post back on June 2nd, 2021 that they will be strategic when releasing new PC titles in the future. “I want to emphasize that PlayStation will remain the best place to play our PlayStation Studios titles at launch.”, said Herman Hulst, head of Playstation Studios. “But we do value PC gamers, and we’ll continue to look at the right times to launch each game.”
At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be major plans for having all of their newest titles released onto PC, but some of Sony’s biggest exclusives are already planned to be dropped onto the Steam platform soon in 2022, including God of War (2019) and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection. Even more recently, a leak has revealed that Sackboy: A Big Adventure could be coming to PC, as well.
While releasing year-old titles long after they’ve had their run on Playstation consoles is one thing, but the biggest question is: Will Sony see an opportunity to release new titles on Playstation 5 alongside the PC? That would be an interesting strategy to take and a very welcome one.
The Xbox platform has shown great promise as several exclusive titles on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S has been released on day one on PC via the Windows Store. With full cross-play functionality, cross-buy, and the ever-popular Xbox Game Pass is available on Xbox and Windows Store, Microsoft has proved that having multiple releases vis their consoles and PC isn’t such a bad idea. Sony could easily go the same route as Microsoft, and while this could upset some of the Sony loyalists out there, this could do wonders for the Playstation ecosystem as a whole.
