With Sonic Frontiers being akin to an RPG, many are hoping there are multiple characters to play. It’s a perfect opportunity to play different roles like Sonic being a speedster, Knuckles being some kind of DPS, or Tails playing support. With that hypothetical in mind, who are the playable characters in Sonic Frontiers? We can share what we know below.
Playable Characters in Sonic Frontiers
Unfortunately, the only character you can play in this game is none other than the Blue Blur himself: Sonic. From all the footage you have seen in trailers and extended gameplay demos, the game is mostly centered around him.
The Starfall Islands are vast, with several speed obstacles and rails to grind. It only seems suitable that Sonic is the only playable character here. He’s also the only one who is consistently capable of helping his friends from getting out of dicey situations. That isn’t to say that his other friends aren’t present, as you will hear from their dialogue exchanges throughout.
While this might come as a disappointment to many, Sonic’s gameplay is unique enough so that the omission of other major characters won’t feel like a missed opportunity. This is an entirely new game to what we’re used to in previous titles. There’s a lot of exploring to do, new obstacles to overcome, and colossal enemies to defeat.
It would only make sense to create a game with Sonic at the helm of taking on grand threats that made previous other final bosses seem like nothing. He’s at the forefront of all the major events in the game, but he still has his close circle of friends and new ones to help him along the way.
Not to mention, with the cutscenes making callbacks to previous games, Frontiers may actually expand upon a new era of Sonic that may shed a light on characters who previously had less screen time.
Sonic Frontiers is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
