During your journey in Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, you’ll inevitably come across various locked doors. Unfortunately, Erik, despite being a Thief, can’t open them. Instead, you’ll need to special keys to get inside and get the loot stashed within.
For what it’s worth, both keys are related to the story, so you can’t actually miss them. The locked doors, on the other hand, are easy to miss. Not only are some of them hidden in remote areas of Erdrea, but the others are in areas so early in the game that you wouldn’t think to check there once the corresponding key is obtained.
Here are the two keys, where you get them and the locations of the doors they unlock:
Magic Key (Unlocks Red Doors): Phnom Nonh
- Cobblestone Village
- Downtown Heliodor
- The Hotto Steppe
- Gallopolis City
- Gondolia
- Zwaarsdrust Region
- Dundrasil Region
- Puerto Valor
- Lonalulu
- Insula Centralis
- L’Académie de Notre Maître des Médailles
- Phnom Nonh
- Insula Australis
- Insula Occidentalis
Ultimate Key (Unlocks Barred Doors): Post-game
- Helior Dungeons
- The Cryptic Crypt — Cell Block
- Gallopolis — Well
- Gondolia
- Puerto Valor
- Phnom Nonh
- Insula Orientalis
- Insula Incognita
- Insula Occidentalis
- Sniflheim Castle — Basement
- Sniflheim — Whale Way Station
- The Manglegrove — Whale Way Station
- The Hotto Steppe — Northern Whale Way Station
- Champs Sauvage — Whale Way Station
- The Battlegrounds
That’s it on how to open locked doors in Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. If there is one bit of advice I’d leave you with, it’s that you should try to revisit old areas and open the listed doors as soon as you get the corresponding keys, rather than sitting on them and waiting. Some of the treasure is nice regardless of when you get it, but others, such as the 5000g inside Downtown Heliodor, isn’t as valuable later on.
