Are you pushing twenty or more hours in Fallout 4 and just noticed a little indicator on your Pip-Boy that says you have something called Molerat Disease? You’re not along, this pesky sickness has infected a large portion of the Fallout 4 player population, but many aren’t sure what it is or how to cure it. The answers to the questions are simple, but many won’t like them.

First off, what is Molerat Disease? Well, if you have it then you probably remember Vault 81. This underground fortress featured a little mission called Hole in the Wall, which tasked you with finding a cure for a sick little boy who had been bitten by a molerat. Sound familiar? Yeah, apparently Bethesda wasn’t playing around with this thing.

If you got bit on this mission, or even if your companion was bit, or you had blood splashed onto you, then you were infected. This means you’re stuck with the disease unless you can cure it, which will give you a permanent -10 hit to your HP. Very late in the game this won’t be a huge deal, but you’ll never build that perfect character without the cure.

So, how do you cure Molerat Disease in Fallout 4? At the end of that mission you were given a choice to keep the cure, split the cure, or give it all to Austin, the sick boy from Vault 81. If you chose the latter then unfortunately the cure is all gone (though there’s a little hop if you’re on PC so keep reading). If you split or saved the cure then you can easily cure yourself by using that item.

If you’re still at this point in the story there is hope for you. A bug, which might be patched out later, can be used to get all the good of giving away the cure, while actually keeping and using it for yourself. During the dialogue with the doctor, when he asks if you will give up the cure, simply move around until you break the conversation, go into your Pip-Boy, and use the cure. When you look at the doctor again you should still be able to pick to option to give away the cure.

If you’re playing on PC then there is only one other option, though it feels a bit like a cheat, much like the exploit above. By going into the command line by pressing ~ you can add the cure back to your inventory by using the command “player.additem 00055F10”. Do this and you’ll have the cure again, use it and you’ll be right as rain.
