How to Fix GTA Online Not Connecting – Common Errors and Fixes

Recommended Videos

GTA Online always has a thriving community of players rallying around its servers and with any experience that has a lot of online functionality, there are bound to be a few connection issues from time to time. If you are running into these issues and can’t access the game then you will be wanting to get it sorted as quickly as possible. Thankfully there are a number of potential fixes to utilize and attempt to stop the problems. This guide article will take you through how to fix GTA Online connection issues for the game.

Methods To Fix GTA Online Not Connecting

There are a variety of methods to test for fixing the connection issues that you may be experiencing. In order to keep everything neat for reading and easy to check back and access, these potential fixes will be listed in the following table:

Method/Fix Process
Changing Your DNS Settings Changing your DNS to Google DNS if it isn’t set to that already is a great method to try and fix the issues. For any platform you are playing on, you will need to go to the system settings (outside the game) and within the settings of the WiFi area, there should be an option to change your DNS. The primary address will be 8.8.8.8 and the secondary address will be 8.8.4.4 for the servers.
Resetting your router Even though this is one of the most commonly tried methods, if you haven’t already attempted resetting your router to fix the issue it would be a great idea to try this. After a successful reboot of the router, simply reload the game and look if the connection issues have stopped for the game.
Check the Rockstar Service Status Sometimes you may actually find that it isn’t your side that is the issue for connecting. There may be officially scheduled maintenance or server issues on the developer’s side, therefore you could check the status of the official servers through this link.
Checking your Internet Connection Speed and Increasing It if Possible You should have around 7.5 MB/s download speed and 0.5 MB/s upload speed minimum for GTA Online and it would be worth checking that both your download and upload internet speeds are of this level. If they aren’t, you could try reducing the internet ‘resources’ by stopping other devices from using as much WiFi for the time being while you are playing GTA Online. This will likely increase the speeds of your internet.
Re-installing the Game (More suited for Disc Versions) If none of the above methods have resulted in any fix for the connection issues, and you are sure that the official servers are still online. Then you could always try re-installing the game but this would be the last resort method as usually, this wouldn’t fix the issue but there have been many times when re-installing a game fixes underlying issues of course.

As can be observed, there are a lot of great methods you can try for fixing the game. If none of these methods work, it could be beneficial to contact Rockstar Support through the official website. If the fixes did work for you then you can get back to all of the latest updates in no time!
