Ever since Telltale’s The Walking Dead debuted back in 2012, the series has had a strong connection to its save file system. While each new season and re-release has changed things around, typically fans have been able to continue their original journey by transitioning save files between each season. This has remained true throughout the intervening years, but with the release of The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series things have changed somewhat. Save file transfers are baked into the experience here, but only in certain ways. Here’s a rundown of how to transfer save files in The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series.
How to Transfer Save Files
First off, any returning players will wonder how to bring a previous save file into The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series right away. While this was possible with previous releases, it does seem like the process is either tougher or impossible this time around. If you have a Season 1, 2, 3, or 4 save file you wish to import right away into The Telltale Definitive Series release, currently there doesn’t seem to be a clear and easy way. Nothing will prompt this upon first startup, and the game doesn’t seem to recognize any saves outside of its own. This could change in the future, so check back for updates, and if you’re playing on PC then you may be able to manually make it work by navigating to your user profile folder, Document, Telltale Games, and messing with the various files found there, but I’d recommend waiting or making sure you have backups.
With that unfortunate bit of news out of the way, there is a way to transfer save files within The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series, between each season. Once you complete the season, or even just select episodes within them, the next release will recognize that save file and offer to import it when you start a new game. Just follow the on-screen prompts once you start up Season 2 or any of the later releases and the game should take care of the rest. If you don’t wish to complete the earlier seasons then you’ll just have to let the game make random choices for you, or jump to the later games that feature a choice simulator where you can basically recreate your original save file.
