Mortal Kombat 11 is now available and with it comes an enjoyable roster of characters to play as in the game, with most being familiar characters from the past. The game does have a few characters that can be unlocked in some form as well as a few that you might think are unlockable, but sadly are not. This guide will break down who you can and cannot unlock in Mortal Kombat 11.

How To Unlock Characters In Mortal Kombat 11

As we have covered in a few other guides, there are two characters available in the game that will not be unlocked just by buying the game itself and starting it up. Frost is available in the game as an actual unlockable character, which you can read about in the guide specifically about her.

Shao Kahn is also the other character you may not have access to at the beginning due to him being a pre-order bonus. We go into further detail in our other guide about Shao Kahn, though you just should know he’s either pre-order DLC or must be bought.

Going beyond Frost and Shao Kahn, there are sadly no additional characters that are available in the base game for you to unlock. Playing through the story might make you think that Cyrax and Sektor have to be unlockables, but they are not at all.

Both Cyrax and Sektor fall into the same category as Rain, Baraka, and Tanya in Mortal Kombat X, where they were only available as enemies you fight against during story mode. While Rain and Baraka never made it into the game as playable characters at all, Tanya was sold as DLC later with full variations and everything, so perhaps we will eventually see the same with Cyrax and Sektor either separately or maybe as part of Triborg again.
