Pokemon Sun and Moon Guide: Defeating Hala, The Melemele Island Kahuna

Pokemon Sun and Moon has definitely shaken up the formula that we have gotten used to over the years. In lieu of gyms that have been around since the start, Island Trials have taken their place, with Kahuna battles also being found in the game as the final test of each island.

We already told you how to complete the Melemele Island trial in Verdant Cavern, but there is also one final challenge you must face against the kahuna of the island, Hala.

Hala is a character you meet very early in the game, but you will finally get a chance for a final face off with them after completing the Island Trial. After completing Verdant Cavern and heading through Route 3, you will end up back in Iki Town.

Once you get to Iki Town, you will see Kahuna Hala to the north, so simply go speak with him and a battle will start. For the purposes of this guide, we will list all of the moves that we encounter during our battle. We purposely drew out the battle longer to see more moves, but sometimes the AI ends up sticking to just a few of them.

Kahuna Hala

Mankey – Level 14 (Fighting)

  • Moves:
    • Pursuit
    • Focus Energy
    • Karate Chop
  • Strategy: You can always use any Psychic or Fairy moves against Mankey, but considering this is early in the game, odds are that your best bet will be to use Flying types here. Flying types are pretty common early and you shouldn’t have much problem raising one to fight here.

Makuhita – Level 14 (Fighting)

  • Moves:
    • Fake Out
    • Arm Thrust
  • Strategy: See above strategy.

Crabrawler – Level 15 (Fighting)

  • Moves:
    • Leer
    • Pursuit
    • Power-up Punch
    • All-Out Pummeling (Z-Move)
  • Strategy: See above strategy.

Rewards: $2,400, Fightinium Z
